Protect Every Life.\u201d*Dr Rajendra Nanavare Pulmonologist<br \/>\n**<br \/>\nHIV\u2013TB: The Deadliest Duo Demands Immediate Action<\/span>\n<span>HIV and Tuberculosis continue to remain one of the most dangerous medical combinations in India. On the occasion of World HIV Day, experts warn that the coexistence of these two infections dramatically increases mortality\u2014yet both are preventable and treatable if diagnosed early.<\/span>\n<span>HIV increases the risk of developing TB by 20\u201330 times, making TB the leading cause of death among people living with HIV. What makes this combination more threatening is that TB in HIV patients often presents atypically\u2014with a normal chest X-ray, smear-negative samples, and non-specific symptoms\u2014leading to delayed diagnosis.<\/span>\n<span>Timely Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) has transformed HIV management. Modern regimens, especially Dolutegravir-based TLD, suppress viral replication rapidly and significantly reduce the incidence of TB. Early ART initiation, ideally within 2 to 8 weeks of starting TB treatment, is now the global standard to improve survival.<\/span>\n<span>HIV\u2013TB co-infection can be controlled only through vigilant screening, rapid diagnostics, and integrated care. Every HIV patient must be screened for TB, and every TB patient must be offered HIV testing. Strengthening laboratory capacity, improving access to viral load testing, and ensuring uninterrupted ART and anti-TB drugs must remain national priorities.<\/span>\n<span>On this World HIV Day, public health leaders emphasize a strong message:<br \/>\n\u201cDetect Early.
